Lighting Supervision

Since 2019, Diego Ocaña has worked mainly in Riyadh-Saudi Arabia, supervising the lighting of major urban and infrastructure projects, as well as confidential projects across the Kingdom.

This experience has given him a close understanding of the technical and coordination challenges involved in delivering lighting at a large scale.

With 32 years of experience in lighting design, he provides independent supervision to help clients and project teams turn design intent into a well-executed result. His work spans technical reviews, product assessments, coordination with project teams and the evaluation of lighting as it is installed on site

My supervision experience includes large-scale urban and landscape projects in Riyadh. The following are some examples illustrating the project context and my specific involvement in each assignment.

Designed to be the world’s largest linear park and a major urban regeneration initiative under Saudi Vision 2030. A 135Km corridor across Riyadh city.

Launched in 2019 as part of Saudi Vision 2030, the Green Riyadh Program is one of the world’s most ambitious urban greening initiatives. Overseen by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC), it includes the creation and renovation of approximately 3,374 parks and gardens across the capital.

Al Rimal Park, in northeastern Riyadh, is being developed as part of the Green Riyadh Program. With more than 159,000 trees and shrubs, the park aims to reduce urban heat and improve quality of life. It will include running paths, cycle lanes, children’s play areas and places to rest, in line with Saudi Vision 2030.

Wadi Um Al-Qasr Park, in Riyadh’s Al Uraija Al Wusta district, transforms a natural valley into a public space within the Green Riyadh initiative. Illuminated walkways, a pedestrian bridge, ponds and waterfalls make it a welcoming place to walk and relax after dark.

Al Hair Lakes Park, about 45 km south of central Riyadh, is a natural wetland oasis at the end of the Wadi Hanifah basin. Its interconnected lakes, small waterfalls, illuminated paths and picnic areas make it a popular escape from the city.

A monumental, 21-meter-tall sculptural fountain located in Al Ouroba Square in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The sculpture symbolizes a “symphony of life,” blending the constant movement of water with a three-dimensional nighttime lighting choreography.

A successful lighting project depends on more than a strong design. It requires careful technical review, coordination and attention to detail throughout construction.

I provide independent lighting supervision for architectural, urban and infrastructure projects. With 32 years of experience in lighting design, I help clients and project teams make informed decisions as a design moves from drawings and specifications to an installed result.

Lighting decisions made during procurement and construction can significantly affect the final appearance, performance and cost of a project. My role is to identify issues early, assess proposed solutions and help the team maintain the intended lighting quality.

I can join a project at a defined stage or provide ongoing support through installation and final review. The scope is tailored to the project and the responsibilities of the wider team.

Review lighting drawings, calculations and specifications to identify technical gaps, coordination issues and opportunities for improvement before they affect the work on site.

Assess proposed luminaires and technical documentation against the project requirements, including photometric performance, visual quality, durability and maintenance considerations.

Evaluate alternative products and technical solutions, considering both initial cost and their effect on the design, performance and long-term operation.

Review samples, mock-ups and installed works to assess how specified solutions perform under real project conditions.

Work with clients, designers, contractors and suppliers to resolve lighting-related questions and support clear, practical decisions.

Assess the completed installation, identify items requiring adjustment and help the team achieve a coherent final result.

HOW I WORK

I review the design intent, technical requirements, programme and responsibilities to establish where lighting supervision can add the most value.

I assess documentation, product proposals and technical queries, then communicate clear observations and recommendations to the relevant teams.

During construction, I review mock-ups or installed works as agreed, identify issues and help develop practical solutions.

I assess the completed lighting against the agreed requirements and recommend any final adjustments needed to improve its performance and visual quality.

Whether you need an independent review at a critical stage or lighting expertise throughout construction, I would be pleased to discuss the scope of your project.
